Meet the Team

The Owners - Maxine and Mark

Team Tutsham is owned and run by Maxine Buckby and Mark Finch. Maxine has owned and ridden horses since the age of ten where she successfully competed at local and higher level shows.

Starting with just a handful of horses, their hobby and passion has grown into the Team Tutsham Charitable Trust. With word getting round that horses and ponies in need could be given a safe and loving home, more and more horses were donated and purchased. This meant bigger premises were needed and as such they moved to Tutsham Farm near East Farleigh, Kent.

With an aim of providing disadvantaged children in Kent with the opportunity to learn to ride, care for horses and socialise with other children of varying ages and backgrounds, Maxine and Mark thoroughly enjoy utilising their own experience and passing on their knowledge to the children at Team Tutsham.

Yard Manager - Bethan Wickens

Bethan Wickens is a fundamental part of Team Tutsham. Come sunshine, rain or snow she is looking after the 35+ horses and ponies Team Tutsham is fortunate enough to have.

Not only does Bethan feed, water and check the horses everyday she has to try to keep them fit and healthy by riding as many as she can and has often got her hat on ready to swap from a 13hh pony to a 17.3hh horse!

Bethan is a keen showjumper herself and is often out competing and has competed at Hickstead in 2015.

Team Tutsham loves seeing her do well and she is a really positive role model for the children that come to ride with us.

Instructor and Assistant - Julie and Kerry

Instructor - Julie Seery
  • BHS  1, 2 & 3
  • NVQ 2&3
  • Horse Diploma (Hadlow College)
  • Qualified artificial insemination technician

At 16 Julie started at Highstead Riding Centre, where she worked on and off for 23 years. She gained her qualifications and in 1994 worked as a showjumping groom which she loved. During this time she also got the opportunity to compete locally, and went on to be a show groom.

One of Julies highlights was competing at the Kent County Show, and though she didn't place that day she bought her first horse Buster who was an American quarter horse and western trained.
With Buster she competed locally and nationally with a fair amount of success, also competing in affiliated dressage and she also trained a rider to competitive level.
In 2007 she went to Hadlow College where she gained a Horse Diploma.
At this time Julie continued to work at Highstead Riding Centre where over the years she has taught many people. In addition to teaching her other duties included helping with mares that are in foal, helping with covering of these mares, and handled the foals.
Currently Julie is looking after 5 dressage horses including a stallion and teaching at Team Tutsham - we thoroughly enjoy having Julie on board!

Instructors Assistant and Head Fundraiser - Kerry Smith

BHS LEVEL 1 (Distinction)

NVQ Breeding and racehorse management (level 1, 2 and some of level 3)

Kerry has 20 years experience with horses in a variety of disciplines including dressage, trekking, and yearling prep and has NVQs that she gained whilst in Newmarket.

While doing her Education degree she learned that research had been carried out on the positive effect horses have on people. The area that interested her most was the profoundly positive and immediate effect horses have on children who have difficulty engaging in schools. While writing her dissertation she managed to attend some great workshops in Equine guided education and equine assisted therapy and was fortune enough to meet some key figures in this sphere.

She is now looking forward to becoming a qualified instructor and is looking forward to doing her Riding and Road safety as a pre-requisite to her stage 2. She would also like to take part in an EGALA course in the future.

Kerry is also our Head Fundraiser and arranges our events and shows whilst assisting Julie with all the children at Team Tutsham.
